The Marlins are Number 18 in the MLB Farm System Rankings

We are just a few short days from the glory known as Opening Day, and as we wait to see what talent the Jumbo Shrimp will field this Friday when they open at Gwinnett, here’s a quick look at the MLB Farm System Rankings:

In short, it’s not that great for Jumbo Shrimp fans. The Marlins affiliates sit at number 18 on the table, well off their 2022 ranking when they sat at number 6.

The complete report can be found here: Ranking All 30 Farm Systems. The pertinent portion of the report concerning the Marlins farm system is below.

18. Miami Marlins
2022 midseason rank: 16
2022 preseason rank: 6
2021 midseason rank: 3
2021 preseason rank: 4

Top 100 Prospects: Eury Pérez, RHP (No. 13); Jacob Berry, 3B (No. 61); Max Meyer, RHP (No. 67)

The Marlins’ strength in both the Majors and Minors is young pitching, and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara has taken Pérez under his wing this spring. Dax Fulton is another potential frontline starter, and Meyer, Jake Eder and Sixto Sánchez could be as well if they can bounce back from injuries. Miami needs Berry, the No. 6 overall pick last July, to reverse its recent lack of success with first-round position players.

While this is nothing to crow about, it is three spots higher than Keith Law’s rankings published in the Athletic prior to Spring Training:

So…that’s progress?

I have a feeling that we will be seeing a lot of players cycle through town this season as the Marlins try to figure things out. For sure we will be seeing lots of organizational “depth” players – hey, what else is Triple-A for, right? We may indeed see some of the names listed above, like Perez, Eder, Barry, Sánchez (if he’s healthy). Hopefully one or more of these players have a breakout season and lead the Shrimp to a few good wins before being called up.
