Rogers Hornsby was Absolutely Correct

In addition to being a great ballplayer, masterful hitter, and World Series winning manager, Rogers Hornsby was a bit of a philosopher. His wonderful statement about the useless time between the end of the baseball season and the beginning of spring training perfectly encapsulates what I feel each and every winter: I miss baseball.

When I say I miss baseball, I don’t just mean the sport itself. I do miss that. But more than that, I miss the daily routine of baseball: Checking box scores in the morning. Looking at my fantasy baseball team stats. Waiting for the early afternoon game(s), then the later afternoon games, followed by the full slate of evening games. Capping it all off with the west coast games that run late into the night. Then watching as many highlights as I can before sleep demands my attention. And then repeat until November. It’s a rhythm to life that is unmatched by anything. I am completely out of sync when it doesn’t exist.

We are almost there. It’s so close. Until then, I will staring out the window and waiting for the inevitable arrival of spring.
