Teams always seem to come back to Earth after a big event like Opening Day, so when I went to yesterday’s game, I did so with the full expectation that the Jumbo Shrimp would hit a little less, Norfolk would hit a little more, and the game would be a little less explosive on a hot, hot day at the Ballpark.
Boy, was I wrong. The Jumbo Shrimp cranked out 16 hits on the day to win 10-7.
The hero of the game, once again, was Jesús Sánchez. All he did was go 5 for 5, with a triple, home run, and 4 RBIs. He’s batting an insane .700 with an OPS of 2.200! Yes, those numbers are absolutely unsustainable, but it’s still amazing to see such a great run to start the season.
Not to be outdone, Lewin Díaz went 2 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBIs. Monte Harrison went 2 for 5 out of the lead off spot, but I have to tell you, he looked well off of his game swinging and missing badly at some breaking balls.
Shawn Morimondo had a decent outing for the Shrimp, but he was taken deep twice in his 3.2 innings of work. Starters aren’t long for the Shrimp, it would seem. Whether it is by necessity or design given the start of the season, the middle/long relievers are going to be the ones picking up the Wins since the starters are pulled so early. Nevertheless, it seems to work.
Jahmai Jones led the way for Norfolk going 3 for 5 with a triple and a home run. Tyler Nevin also homered for the Tides.
A small number of Tides/Orioles fans were in attendance yesterday. We welcome them to Jacksonville. Next time guys, you need to coordinate the “O” while singing the anthem just a skosh better.
Game 3 of the series is tonight at 7:05 pm.
Navy Town Showdown Scoreboard: Jax – 2, Norfolk – nil. Ring a ding!
